Gaussian Filters for Effective Back Analysis of Soil Parameters using Tunneling-induced Deformations

This work shows that Gaussian filters can be applied very effectively to back analysis of the geomaterial parameters using tunneling- induced deformations. We examine and compare the performance obtained from the extended Kalman filter (EKF) and a filter more capable of handling nonlinear model - the unscented Kalman filter (UKF). The effectiveness of the set of Gaussian filters for back analysis is demonstrated through application for identifying a number of constitutive parameters of the Hardening soil model in the context of mechanized tunneling.
