The greater area of Karlsruhe, Germany, has a fast growing public transport system. In the last 15 years the number of transported people increased by 45 % to around 178 million and therefore demands a new suburban railway tunnel, which is actually under construction. Design and construction process are highly influenced by the logistical and technical challenges derived from the heartbeat of the inner city of Karlsruhe. This article describes the general logistical concept and its measures to control the individual and public traffic flow under consideration of the additional movements for the construction site. Furthermore the tunnel and station design, the design process and measures for an efficient and safe construction of the tunnel are presented in the article, whereas special attention is given to the geotechnical works, due to its high risk potential.
