Risk Analysis – An improvement to tunnel safety design
The Brazilian standard ABNT NBR 15661 requires risk analysis at tunnel designphase. The main goal of risk analysis is to help the designer to identify potentials scenarios ofincidents that can result in fire, explosion, leakages and heavy structural damages endangering driversafety and tunnel life. The risk analysis concept is elaborated in three distinct phases: analysis, evaluation and finally, management. Once the hazard is identified, safety measures proposed can beimplemented and personnel be trained to respond to tunnel emergencies. Unfortunately, the lack ofknowledge of its benefits to tunnel safety design results to not be often used by the tunnel designers. The paper shows details of the risk analysis techniques suitable to tunnel safety design and presents adiscussion of its importance.
