This paper aims to present the future French guidelines of the working group GT41 of the French Tunneling Association (AFTES). These recommendations provide an overview of the application of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) to the design and construction of sustainable tunnels. They describe the methodology to be applied depending on goals and available information. LCA enables to evaluate global environmental impacts. By accounting for these aspects (like carbon footprint and land use) in addition to economic and social ones, these guidelines explain how to shed new light on the decision-making process. They make some suggestions for the implementation of sustainable criteria into public contracts. Eco-design requirements are also addressed: choice of materials and construction technique. The main challenge definitely consists in providing objective evidence that users and citizens could benefit from underground solutions, especially in very dense urban areas.
