In 2008 the first Deep Tunnel Sewerage System (phase 1) was completed and implemented in Singapore. The concept of the DTSS involves deep tunnel sewers that convey waste water by gravity to centralized water treatment plants. The system is an efficient and cost efficient solution to meet long term needs for waste water collection, treatment and disposal. Seeing the demand today especially in metropolises there is a huge need for sewerage systems or drainage networks in urban and industrial districts. The realized STEP in Abu Dhabi is an example for such a drainage network comprising a main sewer, supply tunnels (link sewer) and pumping stations. Further projects are planned or are already being constructed to be ready for future urban development and to ensure that the cities and metropolises will be able to meet the future needs of anticipated population growth. The paper spotlights selected TBM technology used in demanding conditions with focus on geology and environment for selected deep sewer tunnel projects.
