Water resource protection and eligibility for financing in underground projects

Water resource protection and eligibility for financing in underground projects

Water_Resource_Protection_and_El

M. Coli / L. Martelli

In underground projects, thoroughly assessing the water related issues early in the project cycle would substantially reduce risks for cost and time overruns, environmental damage, mitigating Climate Change, increasing the economic and environmental feasibility, as well as the public consent. Compliance on regulations for eligibility of funding and environmental safeguards is the overarching principle for a well-planned and successful tunnel project implementation. The aim of this paper is twofold: i) defining the water issues and funding compliance regarding the EU Water Framework Directive (WFD) and; ii) introducing the Hydrogeological Excavation Code (HEC) as an environmental safeguard. In this sense, the Hydrogeological Excavation Code (HEC) is a valuable tool for ensuring natural water body safeguard, safety during works and compliance with requirements for funding eligibility.
