The Tunneling Validation - a ranking-based back analysis on massive data streaming

The Tunneling Validation - a ranking-based back analysis on massive data streaming

The_Tunneling_Validation_-_a_Ran

A. Raschilla / V. Violo

After the completion of the 31,5 Km of tunnels, we had to face a challenging task. While daily back analysis was in the established procedures and contributed greatly to the quality and reliability of the excavation control process, at the end of the tunneling the Owner required a further validating process on each one of the excavated rings, aiming to close the hand over protocol and NCR if any, ruling out possible over-excavation that, due to brittle behavior and/or clay present, could trigger long term settlements. A ranking qualitative algorithm based on a score system to be applied to each excavation cycle that resulted in a rank had been developed for this purpose. If the rank was above a threshold that required more data, further detailed investigation was carried out. If the rank was lower, the ring could be validated and handed over to the project owner. Approximately 15000 cycles have been analyzed in approximately 3 months, raising the bar for quality and speed of analysis.
