The Performances of Four EPB-TBMs in Twin Tunnels Driven in a Complex
This paper is a summary of a research study on the performance of four identical EPB-TBMs in twin tunnels of a Metro Project which is being under construction in Istanbul, two TBMs advancing in front of the others. There are three different geologic formations in the area, with often met shear zones and dyke intrusions. There are a limited number of research studies on predicting the performance of EPB TBMs in the similar ground in twin tunnels especially in disturbed zones by TBM. One practical result of this research study is that when normalized thrust values with respect to penetration are considered, it may be concluded that the advance rate of the TBM in a tunnel behind the first tunnel is almost 28% higher than in the first tunnel due to stress relaxation, loosening and fracturing of the ground. The findings also showed that in the tunnel behind the first tunnel, the same unit volume of rock is excavated with 5-10% less energy than in the first tunnel. We believe that the results will contribute to understand the rock mechanics principles governing ground behaviour around twin tunnels.Recipient :
