Although the limit state design method is considered to be an effective technique with regard to the performance criteria of tunnel structures, not many shield tunnels have been constructed using the said method in Japan; many are still constructed using the conventional design method. This is presumably because the benefit from application of the limit state design method is unknown. The objective of this research is to clarify the degree of improvement of the quality of a tunnel structure by application of the limit state design method. The conventional method, or the allowable stress design method, and the limit state design method are compared using our data of dozens shield tunneling projects. Comparison revealed that the benefits to the tunnel structure from the application of the limit state design method differ depending on the ground conditions of the construction site.
