  The choice of cross section form and type of tunnel.

  For long immersed tunnels such as the Fehmernbelt Tunnel with a length over 17 km it is not necessarily a traditional cross section that is the optimal solution. There are several factors that influence the choice of tunnel cross section, and operational conditions such as emergency evacuation, the working conditions for maintenance staff, a reliable power supply for ventilation, lightning, and pumping stations. The paper describes the process of cross section selection, the type of immersed tunnel and the development of the special element concept, allowing tunnel services to be concentrated at discrete locations along the alignment, and creating a safe environment in which maintenance activities can be undertaken.
