The Terzo Valico dei Giovi is a new High Speed / High Capacity railway infrastructure, part of the Rhine-Alps corridor, which connects the ports of Genoa with the existing national rail network. With its length of 53 km, of which 36 km in tunnel, the Terzo Valico dei Giovi is one of the most important high-speed rail projects in Europe. For constructing the tunnel, TBM / EPB excavation is very important where shallow ground depths, highly heterogeneous sedimentary deposits, and inhabited areas are present. Monitoring procedures and systems, both in open fields and in the tunnel, are fundamental for improving safety, respecting the environment, and production when excavating under challenging conditions. This case study analyses and describes resolution of the complications that occurred while excavating the tunnel underneath buildings in one of the most important active Italian commercial centres. The monitoring procedure, applied under the supervision of of Italferr S.p.A.’s Works Management and using a TBM cutterhead digging configuration designed by the General Contractor have proven to be the keys to successful solutions in difficult excavation conditions.
