The Fehmarnbelt Tunnel is a huge infrastructure project – even on a global scale. Hence it will potentially have a big impact on the environment in broad terms. Consequently, the owner (Femern A/S) has developed a comprehensive plan for mitigating these potential impacts and supporting the sustainability of the entire project. It starts with a detailed mapping of the existing environment to establish an environmental baseline and continues with carefully selected measures in each of the project phases: planning, design and execution. This includes continuous monitoring of the environment around the construction sites throughout the execution. This paper will describe the environmental and sustainability goals defined by Femern A/S and how these goals are pursued in practice. The mapping activities have already been finalized, and the design work is ongoing. The first construction works have started, but most of the execution activities will take place over the next seven years. The paper will also include reflections on the potentially positive influence that this huge project will have on the future sustainability development in the construction industry and among infrastructure owners.
