Study of Hydraulic Direct Drive Solution for Cutter head function
This paper presents the application of a hydraulic direct drive solution for variable speed cutterhead function in Earth Pressure Balance Tunnel Boring Machines (EPB-TBM). Benefits of the solution will be discussed and compared to electro-mechanical variable frequency drive in terms of mechanical integration, performance, efficiency, cooling and self-protection ability. A specific hydraulic system architecture will be proposed, dealing with high torque low speed motors in a parallel closed-loop circuit configuration. This will come with a smaller footprint behind the cutterhead, reduced weight on the structure, easy load synchronization, good controllability and ideal performance in breakout conditions. A 1D simulation model of the system will be described and used for the evaluation of performance envelope and energy balance.Recipient :
