The use of rectangular pipe jacking machine has become necessary in Singapore for the construction of passenger subway due to various site constraints where excavation by tradition cut-and-cover method is not feasible due to complex diversion works for utilities and traffic. This paper will discuss about the design and construction of the very first passenger subway for commercial project in Singapore using the rectangular pipe jacking machine. The first two subways were constructed for metro projects by Land Transport Authority on the entrances to Havelock Station and Stevens. The design and construction of this particular subway for commercial project, connecting existing shopping malls, is very challenging as the malls are already in operation at both launching and receiving ends of the alignment. In addition, the subway is located in shallow overburden of about 3.5m below ground and also beneath existing multi-lanes busy road overlain by congested utilities network. In addition, the alignment will also pass through very weak geological condition. This paper will provide the key design considerations, construction techniques and measures implementation which form the key ingredients that make the successful completion of the project.
