The Cityringen Branch-off to Nordhavnen project adds 2.5km double track to the Cityringen underground metro line, along with two new stations (Nordhavn and Orientkaj), an emergency egress shaft at Krauseparken and a crossover between Nordhavn and Orientkaj. A design and construction contract for the underground civil works includes a new underground station at Nordhavn, 1.8km of twin bored tunnel between the new Nordhavn station and the Cityringen bifurcation shaft at Øster Søgade, a new emergency egress shaft at Krauseparken, with adit connection to the main tunnels, and a cut and cover tunnel section and ramp to the interface with the separate construct only contract for the overground civil works. The bored tunnel construction is predominantly through the Copenhagen Limestone; however, the first 120m of the tunnel drive from the Nordhavn station was excavated in mixed ground conditions, comprising the Upper Copenhagen Limestone and overlying Quaternary soil. Within these conditions, the tunnels underpass a trunk railway embankment with a tunnel axis depth at approximately 12 to 16 m below ground level. The railway line remained live during the tunnelling activities. The main focus of the paper is the prediction of the ground movements, the plan for risk management in the execution of the works, and the observed behaviour of the railway embankment during the tunnelling works. This paper shall provide a comparison between the predicted and observed settlements.
