Underground infrastructures can be the preferred mean to deliver regular services to our urban communities, particularly during catastrophic events and major disruptions. The ongoing pandemic emergency has led engineers and planners to rethink the metric of success for future infrastructures. In addition to the underground structural Stability based on engineering principles, the concept of structural Resilience and Sustainability extends to human and ecological sciences with implications in psychology, sociology, human safety, environmental viability etc. The Authors of this paper are coming from different backgrounds and experiences with leading roles in underground projects’ design and construction across the globe. To better define Stability via Resilience and overall Sustainability, they have summarized their observations and supported them with a series of practical examples. With this article, Authors believe that the principles of overall Sustainability will form the basis for underground infrastructure’s Holistic Planning approach consistent across the globe.
