Refurbishing_Old_Tunnels_Using_R

D. J. Hindle

Thousands of kilometres of tunnels that are now well over 100 years old are of vital importance to the economies of many countries yet most have endured much of their life with little or no maintenance. In 2006 UK’s Network Rail approached Innovative Support Systems (ISS) for a temporary railway tunnel support system that could be rapidly and, in particular, safely installed in their main line railway tunnels during short night-time closures. The solution was RamArch, a lightweight steel mesh panel array that could be rapidly assembled to form a rigid arch support. To date nine railway, canal and watercourse tunnels have been successfully refurbished in the UK using RamArch with many more planned or in progress.
