Digitalisation optimises several processes and makes information about the structures easy to access for the whole lifecycle. That's one of the reasons why a couple of industry partners established the Tunnel Digitalisation Center (TDC) in Switzerland. In the TDC, digital tools of each partners related to the tunnelling industry can be proved in the real tunnel environment and furthermore, enhance common development. BIM methods are central in digitalisation processes. Laser scanning technologies are key for the model creation. In this paper, digital interactions to shotcrete layer thickness control on the construction site are analysed, as one of the use cases demonstrated in the TDC. The system determines the layer thickness of the shotcrete close to real time. Operators can add shotcrete to the critical areas before spraying machine goes away and shotcrete hardens. As a result, material and time is saved and most importantly the sufficient layer thickness is ensured. This is crucial for the safety. Collected data are included in the BIM model for tunnel lifecycle. Layer thickness and geology information helps to understand the cause of damages, predict their development and determine necessary maintenance. All this results in a safer tunnel with lower construction and maintenance costs.
