The computers rapid evolution over the last two decades increased the spread of sophisticated and advanced design software. A clear example is the expansion of finite element modelling (FEM). Despite the high accuracy achievable with these models, the study of the geology and geotechnical conditions is often neglected. This paper shows how the application of probabilistic methods to the design of tunnels allows considering the ground related uncertainties, including the correlation between parameters. This allows improving safety and facilitating optimization, which can be translated into CO2 emissions reduction.
