The Fehmarnbelt Fixed Link under construction between Denmark and Germany is an immersed tube tunnel consisting of 79 standard tunnel elements each 217 m long, and 10 special elements in two levels each 39 m long. All the tunnel elements are produced in a special tunnel element factory being constructed near Rødbyhavn on Lolland. The tunnel element factory was initially intended to be a temporary facility only used to produce the Fehmarnbelt Tunnel elements. However, it is now being considered to keep the facility for use in connection with other future Danish infrastructure projects. The paper show examples of how the tunnel element factory in a practicable way may be modified to accommodate other considered tunnel cross sections. Keeping the tunnel element factory after completion of the Fehmarnbelt Tunnel may therefore contribute to substantial savings and to a more sustainable development of future infrastructure projects.
