Numerical and Regression Analysis of Sub -Surface Settlements due to Tunnelling

Numerical and Regression Analysis of Sub -Surface Settlements due to Tunnelling

Numerical_-_Regression_Analysis_

A. Sharma

With trend of incrementally increasing urbanization, use of Rapid Mass Transit Systems using underground tunnels has exponentially increased and is further expected to surge with time. Due to urban locale of the construction of underground system, several structures are often found in close vicinity to it. With growing trend in underground urban infrastructure, it can be further envisaged that underground construction will soon impact existing underground infrastructures as well. Underground construction exhibits ground deformations in ground which impacts the existing infrastructure. Current study is based on assessment of sub-surface settlements and impact on underground structures using Numerical Analysis such as Finite Element Analysis software i.e. PLAXIS 2D. The study extends to draw comparison with semi-empirical analyses using relevant semi-empirical methods in varying stress conditions. Numerical Regression has been undertaken for compared trends for both sub-surface settlements terms of surface settlements in. The resulting trends have been further compared with the existing case studies and relevant literatures and are found to be in fair agreement.
