Measurement of geological joint faces from point clouds - application in tunnel

Measurement of geological joint faces from point clouds - application in tunnel

3D point clouds have recently become a tried-and-tested instrument of assessing geological joint faces. Especially in the case of only brief outcrops during tunnelling, they offer the opportunity to carry out in-depth analyses in a virtual environment without time pressure and risk. These include dip and strike of geotechnically relevant structures, their roughness, the direction of fault zones and the degree of fissure of rock groups. Based on measurements from new tunnel construction projects, aspects of the applicability of point clouds for geological analyses were examined and accuracy analyses of the point clouds were made. The results of the investigations showed that point clouds are generally a useful approach for the measurement and qualified description of geological joint faces and well suited for modern, precise and comprehensible geological documentation in tunnel construction.
