Major Refurbishment of EPB TBM in High Abrasive Grounds under
This paper analyzes two EPB TBMs drive with a length of approximately 2.7km going partially under the Hangang River in Seoul, Korea. The stretch is part of Daegok-Sosa Railway tunnel project and has encountered various combinations of mixed faces: soft rock on the top and hard rock on the bottom, weathered rock in combination with soft rock and soil. After crossing the river, the EPBs have entered full face hard rock (Granite/Gneiss), and afterwards mixed soil with sandy gravel. Due to the various challenging ground conditions which are proven to be highly abrasive, one EPB TBM drive has caused excessive wear, subsequent failed material conveying because of the first and second screw conveyor frequent jamming. In addition, the cutting wheel has been damaged by massive wear of its structural parts, which directly has impacts on performance and safety. As consequence, a major refurbishment of the worn-out parts had to be implemented during a temporary stop. This paper presents an innovative approach of replacing screw conveyers and effective reinforcements of cutting wheel devised by collaboration with experienced manufacturer`s supervisors.Recipient :
