Pressure shaft is one the most important parts of the hydro-power plant project along with various OHS hazards for execution team. Professional methods to reduce the hazards at its source and inherent safety-design of FARAB Co. in Uma Oya Multi-purpose Project, reduce risk to acceptable level, break the accident chain, excavation of 620m shaft and executing reverse metal lining, 6 inconsiderable accidents. This valuable experience can play an important role to share the safety knowledge in similar projects. Procedures are implemented such as; Risk analysis before execution, Substituting of mechanized excavation with drilling-blasting method, Inherently safety-design of metal lining installation using an innovative method of reverse lining from top to down to eliminate the falling hazard, Design a transferring equipment, Execution of 620m high safety factor elevator to transfer people and materials, Provide equipment for emergency situation, Special working at height courses for firefighters, Perform powerful ventilation system Achieving more than 200,000man/hour without causalities of high risk activities for excavation of 620m shaft with 2.5m diameter and executing 840-ton metal lining are main results for safety implementation. Risk analysis plays a key role to define corrective actions in high-risk projects. The effectiveness of corrective actions would be more desirable by joining Engineering and HSE teams.
