The growing need to improve the interoperability amongst different modelling software packages currently used in underground works design provided a great boost to develop three-dimensional analysis tools able to storage, manage and exchange different sources of information. The underground work design and construction requires even more high performances of ground modelling and technical assessment able to address properly the design decisions and cost estimation since the earliest stages of the project life cycle. The 3D modelling suites this demand and allows geologists to perform their studies, creating and testing multiple scenarios as well as sharing information with client and other shareholders. Furthermore, the 3D modelling is suitable to address concepts such as objects interaction, geological uncertainty, and geotechnical ground properties. This paper illustrates some methodological approaches for modelling and prediction of geological and geotechnical conditions applied in tunnel and cavern design.
