This study investigates the effect of the position of the pile with respect to the tunnel in the longitudinal direction (such as pile at the center of a ring or the joint between two rings) on tunnel responses. Series of numerical analyses are performed in the study. The results indicate that the position of the pile along the tunnel longitudinal direction has a significant impact on the opening of joints and slippage of a key segment. For a considered tunnel ring, the greatest responses are induced when the pile is situated at the closest position regardless of relative position to the tunnel ring joint. When considering all affected rings, the greatest overall impact occurs when the pile is located between rings. The case when the pile is located at the middle ring results in the smallest overall impact. However, the positions of key segments with respect to the pile tip must be also considered.
