Heat management of underground high -voltage power lines - a sustainable approach

Heat management of underground high -voltage power lines - a sustainable approach

A. Busslinger / S. Frey

An exceeding number of high-voltage power lines are and shall be transferred underground. Beside non-accessible systems micro-tunnelling-solutions have become very popular. A major challenge of such systems is the removal of cable heat to allow an unrestricted power transmission. Within a Swiss National Grid (swissgrid) study a numerical code (incl. transient simulation of conductor temperatures) has been developed to explore suitable and sustainable solutions of this heat management. The results emphasize the according advantages of natural ventilation (i.e., efficient heat removal by thermal draft at low capital and operation costs; incl. occasional mechanical ventilation on demand). Particularly the transient characteristics of cable load and heat transfer support this concept. To exploit the potential of natural ventilation the involvement of this optimized approach is recommended at an early stage of cable tunnel projects.
