Evaluating different tunnel support systems at the TS Experiment in Mt Terri URL
At the Mont Terri Underground Rock Laboratory (URL), in Switzerland, a series of scientific research projects are being undertaken to enhance knowledge and capability for the development of deep geological repositories for disposal of radioactive waste. This paper presents the monitoring campaign carried out as part of the Tunnel Support (TS) Experiment, in order to assess the performance of different tunnelling support systems (i.e. shotcrete lining and steel sets) while excavating in the Opalinus Clay at a depth of approximately 280m. Field instrumentation was installed close to the tunnel advancing face, using both conventional convergence data and advanced distributed fibre optic strain sensing (DFOS). The observed deformation data results allowed development of a better understanding of the different tunnel support and construction sequence approaches in the short-term, enabling correlations with the mapped rock mass conditions surrounding the tunnels and the associated rock-support interactions.Recipient :
