It is common not to consider the spatial heterogeneity of geomechanical properties when numerical analysis is used in the support design of mountain tunnels. For this reason, tunnel behaviour that greatly exceeds the predictions by numerical analysis may occur at the site. In this study, in order to clarify the effects of the spatial heterogeneity of geomechanical properties in soft rock mass on tunnel behaviour during tunnel excavation, tunnel excavation analyses were carried out considering the spatial inhomogeneity of geomechanical properties in soft rock mass based on the random field theory. And, the effects of the spatial inhomogeneity of geomechanical properties on the tunnel behaviour was statistically evaluated. As a result, it was evident that the effects on tunnel wall displacement and maximum shear strain around a tunnel are large depending on degree of the spatial heterogeneity of geomechanical properties in soft rock mass, and it is necessary to evaluate the effects adequately.
