  Custom-Designed Instrumentations for Backfill Grouting Investigation

  Backfill grouting investigation, to verify the grade of filling of the chamber between the extrados of the lining and the excavation profile, is a mandatory operation required by the Customers in tunneling works. A specific process based on Ultrasonic Tomography is proposed in association with a custom-designed Ground Penetrating Radar. The specific process and the custom-designed GPR have been developed on the base of a Research and Development Contract endorsed by Politecnico di Milano - Dipartimento di Ingegneria Civile e Ambientale and Webuild S.p.A. The two systems will be tested on specimens reproducing the segments of the lining with different backfilling materials. The instrumentations will be than properly designed to be assembled on dedicated units on the TBM backup, to have a fully automated operation. The data registered will be analyzed in real-time for each ring of the lining and the need of a secondary grouting is eventually defined. In this way, the secondary grouting can be duly performed already on board of the backup of the TBM.
