Crossover tunnel in Metro Line-3 of Mumbai is a sequentially excavated (SEM) 103m long tunnel in volcanic breccia rock with 180m2 excavation area which accommodates 6.35m O.D. twin tube TBM tunnels. Due to schedule constraints during the construction, the JV had decided to complete the TBM tunnels prior to Crossover tunnel construction which requires demolishing of previously constructed segmental lining. An optimization of the track alignment is carried out to minimize the dimensions of the Crossover tunnel. An intermediate access shaft and access tunnel is used to reach into the sequentially excavated crossover section face and excavation is planned to advance at both directions. Large cross-section, low overburden in the urban area and expansion of the section after demolishing the segmental lining rings offer challenging design features. This paper focuses on the design concepts of initial lining of SEM Crossover tunnel and construction methodology of demolishing sacrificial segmental lining rings and expansion of SEM tunnel section.
