Combining Road and Railway Safety for the Largest Tunnel Project in Norway

Abstract: ABSTRACT: A common road and railway tunnel system was developed through a risk-based design approach for a new road and railway line on the western part of Norway. Road and railway tunnels with cross passages for evacuation and combined technical rooms provide a safe system eliminating the need for parallel evacuation tunnels and provide improved maintenance access for the railway and common technical systems. The concept reduced both costs and environmental impact of the project significantly.
