Greater Stockholm is one of Europe’s fastest growing regions. This stimulates the need to invest in projects to secure sustainable energy supply and to improve the quality of life and living comfort for Stockholm’s citizens. The Stockholm City Link project is one of these big individual projects that will help to meet this need. It consists of a 5m-diameter cable tunnel that runs about 14km below all other supply tunnels in the city. The tunnel with rock cover of about 20 to 120 meters is excavated by means of mechanized tunnelling technology. The paper highlights the project challenges in particular the geology and site constraints that influenced the TBM design and TBM solution.
