Challenges and unforeseen events during successful
The Copenhagen Cityringen Project has been awarded and managed by the Copenhagen Metro Team (CMT), a joint venture between the Italian companies Salini Impregilo, Tecnimont and Seli SpA. Since 2015 Salini Impregilo owns 100% of the joint venture shares. The 4 EPB TBMs involved in the Copenhagen Cityringen Project have successfully ended their 31-km twin tunnel excavation beneath the city center. The first TBM started in 2013 and the last broke through Copenhagen Central Station at the beginning of 2017. During these 4 years of intense work Seli Tunneling Denmark, the company in charge of the tunnels excavation, had to face and overcome an important number of challenging events. The excavations sat in a very complex frame due to the geological condition in soft, contaminated and underwater table ground through the urban environment, sometimes with very small clearances and cover or through vulnerable areas. Moreover, the works interferences with the existing metro lines and the simultaneous progress of the 21 stations constantly stressed the project logistic and planning. This article describes the always evolving multifaceted system adopted to organize the work, the resources and fulfil at the same time the requirements in the vast construction process. Intense cooperation, winning planning and management leads to set up the right operative procedures, strict mitigation measures, detailed action plans and sometimes also TBMs re-design and mechanical adjustments to face the most critical passages with the minimal risks and interruptions. New production records and important achievements were gained juggling the excavation issues, after all.Recipient :
