Case Studies of TBM Launch and Relaunch Application of FE modelling
Proper TBM launch has a vital role in successful completion of tunnelling projects. This paper reviews common design and construction considerations in different launch and relaunch cases based on experience in two urban tunnelling projects. First case study presents launching of an 1800 mm ID microtunnelling TBM in ground consisting of boulders and cobbles. Boulders caused deviation of the MTBM during launch and multiple broken jacking pipes behind the MTBM in the first 10 m of the drive. Step by step investigation was conducted by the contractor to adopt the final alternate launch method and overcome this issue. In the numerical model, the details of pipe strings was modelled to verify jacking load and confirm the cause of pipe breakage before starting major pipe removal operation. Second case study presents a 3500 mm EPB-TBM launch inside a small shaft and challenges involved in using a 160 m radius curve backup tunnel for assembly of the tailing equipment.Recipient :
