  Assessment of the Limfjordtunnel using nonlinear FEA

  The Limfjordentunnel has an age of about 50 years and does not meet the requirements of an Immersed Tunnel using traditional design calculations and assumptions. In order to validate the structural integrity of the tunnel, an international expert group was formed and part of the research was to perform a non-linear analysis to indicate the capacity of the tunnel. For this analysis a 2 dimensional plain strain analyses was executed and a parametric study was conducted to support the validity and the bandwidth of the results. The main conclusion of the study is that the Limfjorden tunnel has spare capacity due to phenomena of redistribution of stresses and arching effects in shear sensitive areas.
