Applying distributed optic fiber sensor for tunnel monitoring

X. Zhang / W. Broere

Structural health monitoring has become an important aspect in tunnel engineering due to the increased need for maintenance for aging tunnels. Various types of sensors have been employed to monitor the behaviour of tunnels during their service phase. Distributed optic fiber sensor (DOFS) is a new type of sensing technology which has been used recently for structural monitoring. This sensor relies on a continuous fiber cable attached to the host structure, and can obtain continuously distributed strain along the fiber. This paper illustrates the high potential of DOFS in tunnel deformation measurements. DOFS can be specially laid out to monitor shield and immersed tunnel deformations. The sensor layout design for different monitoring purposes is described in this study. Finally, a case study is introduced where, for the first time, DOFS is used to measure immersed tunnel joint displacements.
