Tunnel face collapse is a serious issue for Tunnel construction industry, and currently there is a lack of remote sensing monitoring systems to perform real‐time deformation monitoring to prevent incidents to operators and machinery. Traditional contact measurement systems cannot be installed on tunnel face during construction activity; remote sensing monitoring systems based on electronic/optical technology as TSs are not performing well due to machinery presence and environmental issues, like dust and water. IDS GeoRadar is a provider of radar remote monitoring technology for complex structures and natural hazards, that recently developed an interferometric radar system for tunnel operations applicable for both drill and blast and partial-face mechanical excavation methods. The innovative solution has been adapted to the whole tunnel building process and is able to monitor tunnel face deformation during construction. The radar system detects fall precursors, triggering early warning to increase safety for tunnel operations and to evacuate people/machinery at risk. The new radar system provides sub‐millimetre displacement accuracy at a spatial resolution of tens of centimetres, with updated displacement information every 15 seconds. In this paper, the system is described, along with performance test results and assessment of monitoring performances in real scenarios.
