The Cityringen-project with its 17 Stations and 30km of single-track TBM tunnel is the largest infrastructure project in Denmark for the last 400 years. Besides others, challenges were the high ground water level up to 1.0m below surface and the deep alignment leading to up to 25m deep station boxes. Construction was to be carried out in the proximity of historical buildings and within residential areas. Locally benzene and vinyl-chlorine from earlier industrial sites were predicted to have contaminated the soil. For the waterproofing of the station boxes a compartmentalized loosely membrane was designed with the planned possibility for injection in case of necessity. Due to constraints in the execution of the densely reinforced lining walls of the station boxes water/moist was able to penetrate the concrete elements causing “bleeding walls” with a possibility of a high risk of reinforcement corrosion. Therefore, an additional waterproofing protection was necessary and by using the existing compartmentation system a polymer reinforced acrylic gel was chosen as remedial action solution. The type of the injection material had to be carefully selected fulfilling the technical requirements as well as the stringent environmental §19 regulations. The injection procedure was developed allowing for the gradual construction process for the completion of all the stations and then the entire metro line, Cityringen. The works were successfully completed allowing for opening this important project on time.
