Sydney Heads Rail Tunnel - A Treasure Trove of Planning Opportunities
Sydney is a fast-growing city with a population of over 5 million. By 2066 this is expected to increase to 10 million people. Road congestion is a growing problem, particularly if measured by the ever-increasing travel times experienced by private and commercial vehicles. Given these concerns it is imperative that Sydney's rail network be expanded to both improve the rail network and enhance the quality of life. This project would involve over 60km of twin bored rail tunnel construction in both rock and soft ground. Two very wide water crossings, one being at the Heads to Sydney Harbour and the other at Pittwater will be required. The paper describes the project concept and options and touches on the likely construction duration and cost.
