The WestConnex road tunnel project is the largest civil infrastructure project under construction in Australia. The motorway project is being delivered in three stages and is predominantly underground. It includes 33 km of new or improved motorway linking Sydney’s west and southwest with the Central Business District, and the corridor to Sydney Airport and Port Botany. This paper covers Stage 1b of the WestConnex project, which is the M4 East section linking Homebush to Haberfield. During the procurement of the M4 East, the Design and Construct Contractor proposed an observational, fit-for-conditions approach to provide a water-resistant lining to the road tunnels. This paper outlines the principles involved in using an observational approach to implement appropriate water-resistant tunnel linings on the M4 East project.
