Fire Safety Strategy in Metro Projects The Case of the "Metro Bucharest Line 4 Extension" Project
In the feasibility study and preliminary design of a metro project, the safety concept represents an essential technical and financial issue that drives some of the main design choices. From the beginning on, a high-level fire safety strategy has to be developed. This allows identifying potentially critical elements, from a constructive and operational point of view, to be considered during design. A general procedure for carrying out a safety audit and for devising a fire safety strategy is described. This focuses on the roles of the parties involved, on the identification and management of dangerous situations, on the definition of criteria for protection of human life and infrastructure as well as on the proper integration of all relevant regulations. This allows identifying the fire safety measures and criteria for safety management during design, construction, operation and maintenance required for ensuring an appropriate integration of the fire safety system in the whole process.
