A tunnel boring machine with an opening in the center of its cutter head, i.e., a donut-shaped tunnel boring machine (DTBM), is proposed. Since the new donut type TBM does not excavate the central section, its assumed excavation characteristics include reduced excavation time, due to reduction of the excavation area and elimination of the use of a center cutter. In order to demonstrate these excavation characteristics, this study performs a quantitative evaluation that compares the excavation times of the donut type TBM and full-face type TBM using an excavation experiment that employs a high-strength mortar specimen. The difference between the inner and outer circumference of cutter tracks is calculated using an equation, and comparison is made with the excavation width of the experimental profile in order to determine the impact of the presence or absence of the center cutter based on the excavation profile. KEY WORDS: TBM, center-cutter, mountain tunnel, tunneling machine and equipment 1.
