Having completed immersed tunnel works of Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge in 2018, CCCC Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Island-Tunnel Project established a joint research team on submerged floating tunnel (SFT). We proposed and designed a basin test (1:50) of tethered type SFT with prototype length of 1.2 km. After rounds of discussions on test significance, technical feasibility and details, the 1st generation basin test was initiated in early 2019. A special SFT basin was built in Tianjin and model fabricated in a Dalian laboratory. This paper introduces the general test design scheme and its evolution, critical issues encountered, and improvements for 2nd generation test, based on experience from the first one. Main discussions or findings at works were: 1) the overall SFT basin test should be divided by three stages for mechanism, parameters and engineering respectively, in which the basin test is preferably divided by 3 stages targeted at trial, structural behavior, and validation; 2) a supporting system was required to ensure efficiency and quality; 3) model residual buoyancy simulation alternatives were proposed and compared; 4) attention shall be paid to the risk of SFT model damaging from artificially imposed regular waves.
