Slurry Properties and Operation Modes with VD Shield Technology to Handle Varying Ground Conditions at the Forrestfield Airport Link Tunnel Project
The Variable Density shield drives at the Forrestfield Airport Link tunnel project in Perth cross varying soil conditions composed by different types of sand formations and also by more cohesive clogging-prone formations. The present contribution will show how for the excavation under the Perth International Airport premises in such varying ground conditions there are no perfect, but rather compromise slurry mix solutions for an optimum slurry face support. Based on a dedicated slurry quality program and the definition of threshold values, as soon as Key Parameter Indicators show loss in face support control or an increase of slurry losses into the ground, higher density and higher yield point of the slurry suspension are targeted. In critical situations, VD shield technology allowed to operate with an EPB-like high density in the excavation chamber, without air bubble pressure control.
