The Thames Tideway Scheme is designed to prevent the discharge of untreated storm water and sewerage overflows into the River Thames. This stored effluent will then travel by gravity to the Beckton Sewage Treatment works where it will be pumped back to the surface and treated in the normal manner. Starting in 2016, with an overall length of 25 km, 7.20 m Internal Diameter is due for completion in 2024. The project is split into 3 distinct sections: West Tunnels, Central Tunnels and East Tunnels. The Thames Tideway Central Tunnel is the longest of the three sections, 12.6 km long, 7.8m I.D. primary lining made with segments with a secondary lining of 7.2m I.D. castedin-situ and associated connection shafts. Each ring, 7.80m I.D. is made by seven segments plus the key, 350 mm thick, 1,800 mm wide. The Central section is being constructed by a joint venture of Ferrovial Agroman and Laing O’Rourke (FLO) JV. The Spanish precast company Pacadar has been engaged to produce the segments. Ultra-high strength steel wire fibres have been massively used for the solely fibrereinforced precast segments.
