Performance Analysis of a Tunnel Supported with Ribs Reinforced Shotcrete
Is of great interest in the implementation of constructive supports for tunnels, the execution time, cost and structural performance -considering the quality of the intervened rock mass-. The use of Ribs Reinforced Shotcrete or RRS, defined within the classification system of the rock mass Q, is an option that can meet these three requirements. This article presents the design of a tunnel supported by RRS as a case study. The design is carried out by means of a three-dimensional model of finite elements, in which other stabilization elements such as rigid steel frames, are also studied for comparison purposes. The results obtained show that the performance of the Ribs Reinforced Shotcrete is optimal, and this is because steel bars + bolts + shotcrete acts integrally as a reinforced beam resistant to bending, regarding the pressure exerted by an eventual detachment of wedges or by rock mass pressure (unlike other types of support). The document also discusses the advantages and disadvantages of the RRS method, as well as its versatility to be applied in various geomechanical properties.
