Dubai’s Deep Tunnel Storm Water System - Engineering for Sustainability

Dubai Municipality is implementing the Deep Tunnel Storm Water System as part of a long-term catchment-wide plan for capturing and conveying storm water and groundwater flows. Rising ground water levels in Dubai is increasingly an area of concern as the deep foundations and basement structures of the skyscrapers are curtailing the natural pathways for ground water. For majority of the year, the storm water tunnel will be used for storage and conveyance of excess ground water that is pumped out from the ground. In addition, when the rare rain events happen, the storm water tunnel switched to manage floodwaters. The economic value of any single rain event that can cause flooding today in urban Dubai is too significant to be ignored. This paper presents the sustainable approach Dubai has taken towards addressing two emerging areas of concerns in infrastructure development in Dubai – storm water and rising ground water management.
