The North-Cross Expressway project in Shanghai were introduced, involving deep excavation above existing Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) Line 13 and corresponding impacts under the complex surrounding conditions. Displacements of the MRT tunnel and retaining walls were analysed in the Plaxis software by using hardening soil model to predict the soil displacement. In additional, backanalysis based on the instrumentation monitoring results was carried out to control the wall deflections within allowable limits. More realistic soil parameters were obtained by back-analysing one section, and the other sections were re-analysed according to the updated parameters from back-analysis. Therefore, the re-analysed models would provide more accurate prediction for next steps of excavation and construction.
