  ITA-AITES World Tunnel Congress, WTC2020 and 46th General Assembly Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia 11-17 September 2020 The West Link Project in Gothenburg, Korsvägen Section Klaus Rieker Wayss & Freytag Ingenieurbau AG, Tunnelling Division, Frankfurt am Main, Germany E-mail: klaus.rieker@wf.bam.com Abstract: In Gothenburg, the second largest city in Sweden, a new 8 km long double track railway line for commuter and regional trains will be built - the West Link. The project starts at the main train station - Centralen, where major construction activities have to be conducted - and traverses the city centre, where two new stations, namely Haga and Korsvägen, will be built. For construction, the project was divided in several sections. This paper will focus on section Korsvägen. The client Trafikverket (Swedish transport administration) has awarded the construction contract in December 2017 to a joint venture consisting of the Swedish construction company NCC and the German subsidiary Wayss and Freytag Ingenieurbau AG of the Royal BAM Group. The scope includes drill & blast tunnelling, the construction of ramps, cut & cover structures and the new station Korsvägen. The latter, i.e. all open cut structures are executed under a Design & Build Target Price contract model, whereas all tunnelling is re-measured under a BoQ Built-only contract model. The paper will focus on the various construction challenges stemming from the inner city location, the highly varying ground conditions along the alignment and the dual payment mechanism in one contract.
